It suits a household that spends its evenings in one room, and it asks for floor on three sides in return. We make two, the Hartwell Convertible U Shape Sofa and the larger Langford U Shape Sofa, both handmade at our Yorkshire workshop and built after you order. Is a U shaped sofa right for your room?
A U works best where the seating is the point of the room: a family that watches films together in a lounge or home cinema room, or an open-plan space where the outside of one return marks where the living area ends. It is the wrong shape for a room that has other jobs to do. Because it closes on three sides, every door and radiator has to sit outside it or at the open end.
If your room gives you two walls rather than three, an L shape or a corner sofa will usually sit more easily.
How much space does a U shaped sofa need?
More than its footprint. Add a clear way in at the open end, and room for doors and a coffee table to work around it. Mark the whole U on the floor with masking tape before you choose between the two: the back run and both returns, at the published depth. Then live with it for an evening. A door that now swings into the seat, a cupboard that no longer opens, a radiator behind the back run or a route to the garden that has turned into a detour will all show up before you have spent a penny. Put the coffee table inside the tape too, and check you can reach it from every seat without catching your shins on the way up.
Leave a clear way in at the open end. Once people are seated, that gap is the only way out that does not involve climbing over someone.
This matters more than usual on a sofa this size. Under the M&H 30-Day Return Policy, a sofa that turns out not to fit the room or the route in is not treated as a fault, although any statutory cancellation right that may apply separately to a standard online order is not affected. Four fabrics on the Langford, six on the Hartwell
The Langford comes in Plush Velvet, Chenille, Naple and Conistan. The Hartwell carries those four plus Teddy/Bouclé and Jumbo Cord, so it is the only one of the two you can have in cord. Jumbo Cord is a ribbed fabric with wide raised ribs and channels between them. Plush Velvet has a short, dense pile. Teddy/Bouclé has a looped, nubbly surface you can see as well as feel.
Colour choice depends on the fabric you pick. Order fabric swatches and look at them where the sofa is going to stand, in daylight and again at night. A U is a lot of fabric to meet for the first time on delivery day.
U shaped sofa vs L shape and corner sofas
Some shops file a U under corner sofas and sell it as a U shaped corner sofa. The quicker test is to count the returns. A U shaped sofa has two, one at each end of the back run, and each of ours publishes both returns at the same length. An L shape sofa has a single chaise end, so you pick the side it sits on, while a corner sofa takes a square footprint across two walls.
How much does a U shaped sofa cost?
The showroom at Thorite House in Bradford opens Monday to Saturday, and walk-ins are welcome. If you are coming to see a U shaped sofa in particular, contact the team before you set off. How many people does a U shaped sofa seat?
Approximately 5 to 8 people across our two designs, depending on the model and its configuration. How your household sits matters too, so the quickest way to be sure is to sit on one at the showroom, or tape out the published footprint and count who fits along it.
Do you make a large U shaped sofa?
Yes. The Langford is our large one, with a 335 cm centre run and a 195 cm return at each end. It needs three clear sides of a big room. Tape it out first.
Is there a small U shaped sofa?
The Hartwell is the smaller of our two, with a 280 cm centre run and 160 cm returns. Even that is a big piece of furniture, so small here means smaller than the Langford. In a tight room an L shape gives up floor on one side instead of two.
Does a U shaped sofa come with a footstool?
The Hartwell can. It is sold either as the sofa on its own or with a footstool, and the product page shows the price for each. If the space inside the U is tight, ask us for the footstool's size before you order. The Langford is sold as the sofa alone.
What does convertible mean on the Hartwell?
Convertible means the Hartwell has a flexible configuration, which the Langford does not offer. It does not mean any layout is possible, so if you need a particular arrangement, confirm it with us before you order.
What are U shaped sofas called?
A U shaped couch and a horseshoe sofa are the same layout: seating around three sides of an open centre. American listings often call it a U shaped sectional, and plenty of people here still call it a settee.
Are your U shaped sofas made to order?
Yes. Both are built after your order is placed. Built to order is not the same as bespoke: every size, fabric, colour and option you can select on the product page is standard. Contact M&H if you require a different sofa length or a fabric outside the standard offered range.
Will a U shaped sofa fit through my door?
The published sizes describe the finished U, not the sections it is moved in, so the route needs its own check. Measure the narrowest point on the way in, which may be a stair turn or a landing rather than the front door, and the height anywhere a section may need tilting. Send us the model with your door, hallway, stair and landing measurements, and we will check the access route before you order. Ask for the section sizes of the model you choose at the same time.
How long does a U shaped sofa last?
We do not put a lifespan on a sofa. We put the frame in writing instead: a 10-year commercial warranty on the internal frame, and if a claim is accepted the affected covered part is replaced. Cushions, fillings and upholstery are not included in that warranty. The warranty terms set out how a claim is assessed.
Do you make a U shaped sofa bed or a leather one?
No. Neither specification lists a bed, a reclining mechanism or built-in storage. Both are upholstered in fabric, so if you need a sofa bed or leather, we are not the right maker for it.
