Choose the Sofa Around Your Room
Start with the seating your room needs, then compare the measurements of the exact design you like. The table below matches common rooms and seating needs to the right collection.
| Your room or seating need | Useful place to start | Check before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Compact room or shorter wall | 2 Seater Sofas | Published length, depth and access route |
| Longer straight seating | 3 Seater Sofas | Overall length, depth and walking space |
| Two separate sofas | 3+2 Sofa Sets | Space for each sofa and the route for both pieces |
| Two equal runs around a corner | Corner Sofas | Complete square footprint and nearby doors |
| One longer run with a shorter return | L Shape Sofas | Full footprint and required orientation |
| Seating around three sides | U shaped sofa | Centre run, both returns and surrounding floor space |
Compare Published Sofa Sizes
The same seat-count label can cover noticeably different sofa sizes. The table below shows the spread across M&H straight sofas, so plan the room around the measurements of the design you like.
| Sofa size | Published length | Published depth | Overall height | Seat height |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 seater | 105–120 cm | 80–90 cm | 65–85 cm | 40–45 cm |
| 2 seater | 145–175 cm | 80–90 cm | 65–90 cm | 40–45 cm |
| 3 seater | 180–229 cm | 80–90 cm | 65–90 cm | 40–45 cm |
As each M&H sofa is handmade, finished dimensions may vary slightly from the published measurements as a result of normal manufacturing tolerances.
Within the verified straight-sofa data, individual ranges keep the same published depth, overall height and seat height across their listed straight sizes while the length changes. That helps when comparing sizes within one range, but it does not mean a longer sofa will follow the same delivery route as a shorter one. Extra length can change how the sofa turns through halls, stairs and landings.
Corner, L shape and U shaped sofas use different footprint formats, so check the measurements published for the exact configuration rather than trying to compare them as straight-sofa lengths. The M&H Sofa Size Guide explains the measurements used across the wider catalogue.
Choose the Sofa Before the Fabric
Start with the sofa size and layout that work in the room, then choose from the fabrics offered on that range. M&H uses six fabric families across the catalogue: Plush Velvet, Jumbo Cord, Chenille, Conistan, Naple and Teddy/Bouclé. Not every range offers all six.
Jumbo Cord is an upholstery fabric as well as the name of an M&H sofa range, so the name does not describe a separate sofa shape. Check the fabric selector on the exact product page for the standard options currently available.
Our upholstery fabrics are polyester, rated 15,000 to 25,000 Martindale for general domestic use and UK FFR compliant. Plush Velvet is the one we label a pet-friendly weave, tight-woven and easy to brush clean.
Fabric can look different on a screen. Order physical swatches before deciding if colour or texture matters to the room, and compare them in both daylight and the lighting you normally use in the evening.
Measure the Room and the Route Separately
Start with the finished position. Measure the available floor area and check doors, radiators, cupboards, tables and the space people need to move around the furniture.
Then measure the route into the room. Check the narrowest usable doorway, hallway, staircase, landing, lift and any turn where the sofa may need to change direction. A sofa can fit comfortably in its final position and still be difficult to move through the property.
For delivery, check narrow doorways, stairs, landings and turns along the route. If anything looks close, send M&H the sofa model and your route measurements before ordering.
Made to Order in Yorkshire
M&H sofas are built after the order is placed at our Yorkshire workshop. Sizes, fabrics, colours and configurations already selectable on the website are standard product options.
Made to order does not automatically mean bespoke. Contact M&H if you require a different sofa length or a fabric outside the standard options offered for the design you are considering.
