What is a love seat?

A love seat is a small sofa built for two people. Call it a settee or a couch. The term can mean different things depending on the retailer: some use it for an oversized armchair with room for one, others for a compact two-seater. At M&H it means a small sofa built for two people sitting close, and every design lists its measurements so you can compare it directly.

Cuddle chair, snuggler and 1.5 seater turn up in the same searches. Those describe a single wide seat rather than a two-seat sofa, and M&H does not have one. If a single seat is what you are after, our 1 seater sofas are the closer match. Since the labels move about, published width is the only reliable thing to compare between shops.

Love seats and 2 seater sofas

A love seat and a 2 seater sofa are not the same size. M&H makes 21 two-seater designs, 152 to 170 cm wide, and the eight at the narrower end are listed below.

Somerset and Soho are 152 cm, the narrowest sofas we make. Clara and Amelia are 160 cm. Jumbo Cord, MH Serenity, MH Windsor and Winston are 165 cm. The full two-seater range extends to 170 cm, so the widest sofa here is five centimeters off a standard two-seater and the narrowest is eighteen. On a short wall that matters. On a long one it does not, which is why the published measurements below are the best way to compare them.

Where a love seat works

Two seats and a smaller footprint suit a particular set of rooms:

• a small living room, where a 170 cm sofa leaves too little walking space
• a bedroom, snug, box room or home office
• a bay window or alcove, where the wall run is fixed
• a reading corner, with a lamp and a footstool
• a second sofa alongside a three or four seater

Several of these ranges are also available in larger configurations, including three-seater, four-seater, L-shape and corner layouts where offered, so a love seat bought now can be matched later in the same design and fabric.

How to choose

Start with the wall, not the room

Measure the usable wall run, then how far the sofa can come forward without blocking a door, a radiator or a walkway. All eight are 90 cm deep, so only the width changes. Mark the footprint on the floor with low-tack tape and live with it for a day.

Then check the route in

Arm height and sofa depth are worth checking, because the fixed parts of the frame decide how a sofa moves through a doorway. Five of the eight publish an arm height: 65 cm on Somerset, Jumbo Cord, MH Serenity and MH Windsor, and 61 cm on Soho, the lowest we publish. Clara, Amelia and Winston do not publish one yet. A door leaf is not a doorway. Approved Document M treats clear opening width as a measurement in its own right (750, 775 or 800 mm depending on the hallway), so a 762 mm leaf gives you appreciably less once the door and its stop are in the way. Measure the narrowest opening, the tightest turn and any staircase or lift, then send us your measurements with the model and we will check the route with you.

Then the fabric

Fabric choice varies by design and does not follow price. Somerset, Clara and MH Serenity each offer six fabrics. Soho, Amelia, MH Windsor and Winston offer four. The Jumbo Cord range offers three.

Jumbo Cord is a fabric, not a shape. The range that carries the name is offered in Conistan, Jumbo Cord and Naple, so picking one is a standard option, not a special order, and you will find the fabric across our wider jumbo cord sofas. Order free swatches and judge them in your own light, because screens do not show pile or weave honestly.

Narrower 2 seater sofa dimensions

All measurements in centimetres. These are published dimensions. As each M&H sofa is handmade, finished dimensions may vary slightly from the published measurements as a result of normal manufacturing tolerances. For every model side by side, see our sofa size guide.

We do not publish a net weight, packed size or diagonal depth. If you need one for a lift, a stairwell or a removal firm, send us the model and we will confirm what we have.

Ordering, trial and guarantee

Every sofa is built after you order it. The sizes, fabrics, colours and configurations shown on a product page are the standard choices for that design. A sofa is not bespoke simply because it is made to order. Contact M&H if you require a different sofa length or a fabric outside the standard offered range.

The 30-Day Return Policy starts once it arrives, covering damage, a fault, or a sofa that is not as described. It does not cover a sofa that will not fit, or a size chosen in error. That is exactly why we would rather check your measurements first than take the order today. Statutory rights are unaffected either way.

Eligible M&H sofas carry a 10-year commercial warranty on the internal frame against covered manufacturing defects and structural faults under normal domestic use. Where an eligible frame-warranty claim is accepted, the affected covered part is replaced rather than the entire sofa automatically being replaced. Cushions, fillings and upholstery sit outside it, and electrical components and sofa mechanisms carry no separate M&H commercial warranty.
