Who a four-seater suits

Four seats on one frame beats a three-piece suite when the room has one long, uninterrupted wall and you want the seating to read as a single object rather than three. Open-plan rooms suit them for the same reason: a 240cm run zones a space in a way two separate sofas do not.

It earns its length when four people actually sit on it regularly. If the fourth seat is for visitors twice a year, the three-seater in the same design gives you 40cm of the room back and costs less. That is the honest version, and it is the first thing to weigh.

One thing worth knowing before you browse. Our entry-price ranges stop at three seats. The fifteen designs on this page start at £799, where the catalogue as a whole starts lower. A four-seater is a larger frame and more fabric, and the price reflects it.

3 seater or 4 seater?

Compare within a design before you compare across them.

Moving up a size adds 40cm on thirteen of the fifteen. Majestic and Scarlet are the exceptions at 61cm, because their three-seaters are already 229cm where most are 200cm.

Nothing else changes. Depth, frame height and seat height are identical between the three- and four-seater in a range, so the decision is only ever about length and price. Charlotte at three seats and Charlotte at four are the same 80cm deep and the same 80cm high. One is simply longer.

That has a practical consequence, and it is the useful bit of this whole page. If a smaller sofa from a design has already been into your house, the four-seater will follow it through the same doorway.

Will a 4 seater sofa fit through your door?

Fitting the sofa in the room and getting it into the room are two different problems, and the second one catches people out.

Length is rarely what stops a delivery. Depth and height are, because those are the dimensions that have to pass through the opening.

Approved Document M of the Building Regulations sets minimum clear opening widths for new dwellings at 750mm, 775mm or 800mm, depending on the width of the hallway you approach the door from. Clear opening is not the door size. Once the frame, the stop and the open door itself are in the way, a nominal 762mm leaf gives you noticeably less than 762mm. Measure the gap.

Then measure the same way at every pinch point on the route: front door, hall, the turn at the bottom of the stairs, the lift, the doorway into the room.

On an awkward route the cross-section is not the whole story. Extra length makes a tight stair turn or a small landing harder to negotiate even when the sofa would pass through the door flat. Fabric options vary by design

Six fabrics run across the catalogue: Plush Velvet, Jumbo Cord, Chenille, Conistan, Naple and Teddy/Bouclé. Seven of these designs offer all six and the other eight offer four, so read the list on the product page rather than assuming an option you saw elsewhere carries across.

Price and choice do not track each other. Aaron and Clara are the cheapest four-seaters here at £799 and both carry all six fabrics. Scarlet is £1,250 and carries four. You are paying for the frame and the size, not the length of the fabric menu.

Jumbo Cord is a fabric, not a shape. Worth saying, because it is also the name of one of our ranges, and that range does not run to a four-seater.

What we cannot tell you is how each fabric wears. We do not publish rub counts or fibre percentages, so we have not ranked them by durability and we would rather say so than guess. Order fabric swatches and judge them in your own light and against your own floor.

4 seater sofa dimensions

These are published dimensions, and they are overall measurements, not seat width, seat depth, arm height or back height, which are different things.

Two rows are worth a second look. Chelsea Line sits lower than everything else here, on both the frame and the seat. Some people find a lower seat easier to get out of and some find it too low, so sit on one before you decide. MH Theo is the opposite, and the tallest frame in the collection.

As each M&H sofa is handmade, finished dimensions may vary slightly from the published measurements as a result of normal manufacturing tolerances.

Matching pieces and other shapes

Every one of these fifteen designs is also made as a two-seater and a three-seater, in the same fabrics, at the same depth and the same seat height. A four-seater and a matching two-seater from the same range will look like one set rather than two purchases, and they will sit at the same height when you put them at right angles.

All fifteen also come as an L-shape sofa and a corner sofa. If your room is squarer than it is long, a corner will seat the same four people against two walls instead of one. That is usually the better answer where a 240cm run would block a doorway or a radiator.

Measurements we will take for you

Some measurements we can only give you per sofa. Seat width and seat depth, arm height, diagonal depth, packed size, weight, and whether the legs or arms come off. Those we have not measured across all fifteen designs yet, and they vary enough between them that quoting one design’s figure for the rest would send someone the wrong way.
