Why choose a two-seater sofa?

Eighteen centimetres separates the widest two-seater we make from the narrowest, and in a tight room that is the whole decision. A two-seater earns its place where a three-seater would block the route through: a bay window, a snug, the second sitting room nobody sits in. It also works as the short half of a pair, which is why the three-and-two set has its own collection.

Two adults can sit comfortably, but available space depends on the design and the size of the people using it.

How to choose the right two-seater sofa

Measure the room and the route in

Work out which measurement is limiting you before you look at anything else. If it is width, the MH Somerset and the Soho are narrowest at 152 cm. If it is depth, the Charlotte and the MH Theo are shallowest at 80 cm; the Romeo is 85 cm and the rest are 90 cm. The narrowest sofa here is not the shallowest or the lowest, so pick your constraint first.

Room fit and delivery access are two separate checks.

For the room, mark the published footprint on the floor with low-tack tape and leave it overnight. For access, measure the narrowest usable point on the whole route in  doorway, hall, stairs, landing, lift, and every turn. A sofa that fits the wall and not the hall is the most common way this goes wrong, and it happens on the day, in the doorway, with the crew waiting.

Depth and height are a first indication, not proof. Access also depends on diagonal depth, arm shape, what comes off and how much room there is to turn. M&H does not publish a verified clear opening, packed size or diagonal depth for every model, and we are not going to give you one doorway figure and pretend it covers all twenty-one. Checking the route is your side of this. If it is tight, send M&H the model and your measurements before you order.

Choosing fabric for a 2 seater sofa

Six fabrics run across the catalogue: Plush Velvet, Jumbo Cord, Chenille, Conistan, Naple and Teddy/Bouclé. No single range carries all six. Nine of the twenty-one offer six, eleven offer four, and the Jumbo Cord range offers three.

That last one catches people out. Jumbo Cord is a fabric and also the name of a range, and the Jumbo Cord range is upholstered in Conistan, Jumbo Cord or Naple. Read the fabric list off the product page in front of you.

Published 2 seater sofa dimensions

All measurements in centimetres, published per model rather than as category averages. As each M&H sofa is handmade, finished dimensions may vary slightly from the published measurements as a result of normal manufacturing tolerances.

Seat height is 45 cm on twenty of the twenty-one. The Chelsea Line is 40 cm. If you are buying for someone who struggles to get out of a low seat, those 5 cm matter more than anything else on this page.

Arm height is published on six designs, 61 to 65 cm. We have left the other fifteen blank rather than assign a figure we have not measured. Usable seat width, seat depth, packed size and weight are not published. Ask us for a confirmed figure on a specific model.

Stepping up a size

The step from a two-seater to a three-seater is not a fixed number. On the MH Somerset it is 28 cm, 152 to 180. On the Majestic it is 61 cm, 168 to 229. More than double, for the same change in seat count.

Compare the range you are actually looking at rather than a generic three-seater width. Every published size for every range is in the sofa size guide.

Standard, made to order and bespoke

Every M&H sofa is made to order, built after you buy it rather than taken off a shelf. That is not the same as bespoke.

Size, fabric and colour shown as selectable options on a product page are standard choices, and so are the feet finish and the cushion firmness. None of them costs extra. If you want a firmer or softer seat than the one you sat on, say so with the order.
